The Kind of Play We Grew Up On
Lumio Play is a small toy shop out of Long Beach, California, started by someone who spent years helping raise the little kids in their own family. One short list of toys, and a lot of thought behind each one.
A short list, chosen carefully
We don't try to stock everything. We keep a small collection and think hard about each toy in it, because what a child plays with in their first years actually matters.
Every toy here earns its spot for one reason: it gives a child something real to do with their hands at the stage they're in. That's the whole filter.
Where this came from
I'm the oldest of three, and growing up I was a bit of a third parent to my younger brother and sister. My own childhood was dirt under the fingernails, hours outside, and an imagination that didn't need Wi-Fi.
Watching my siblings grow up in a world where the screen is the default toy is what started this. Handing a kid a tablet is easy. I wanted there to be a good alternative sitting right next to it, something a kid actually wants to pick up instead.
That's all Lumio is. A small attempt at making the screen-free choice the easy one for parents.

Blanket forts and tiny plastic armies
When I was little, I was supposed to be asleep. Instead I was folding my blankets into a cave, setting up little Lego figures inside, and giving each one a base to defend. Nobody told me to do that. I just did it, because that's what a kid with nothing but their own imagination and a pile of blankets comes up with.
That's the kind of play we're trying to protect. Not a specific toy, but the habit of making something out of nothing, on your own, because it's fun and nobody's watching.
I want kids today to still get to have that same kind of night.
Get kids off screens and back into play
Simple, hands-on toys made from natural, child-safe materials. Nothing that lights up, beeps, or needs charging. Just things a child can build, sort, and figure out on their own.
What we stand for
Fewer, better toys
We'd rather carry five toys worth keeping than five hundred that aren't. Each one has to earn its place.
Real materials
Natural, child-safe materials over cheap plastic. What a child touches every day matters, for them and for what ends up in a landfill.
Show up every day
Anyone who has looked after young kids knows it's the same small things done over and over. That's how we treat this shop too.
The early years matter
The first eight years shape so much of who a kid becomes. Good, simple play is a small way to give those years their due.
